OOCL

Process
I served as the lead designer on a logistics visualization application for OOCL (Orient Overseas Container Line), one of the world’s top 10 largest shipping companies. The project aimed to set OOCL apart by showcasing their innovation capabilities. I collaborated closely with two PMs and six engineers from both client and consultant teams.
Mentoring and Managing
One of the client’s engineers expressed a desire to transition into design. Throughout the project, I paired with her, guiding her through the design process while simultaneously developing mockups. This hands-on mentorship included regular assessments using a skills matrix, with feedback provided at key intervals to support her growth. The opportunity to mentor and teach design in real-time was a particularly rewarding aspect of this project.

Impact
Post-launch feedback from OOCL highlighted the success of the project:
"Jessica has become our star user in the Command Center, diligently using the map and taking action based on the insights she gains. Andrew has been actively pitching the app to other groups, who are eager and excited to get on board. We even demoed the app to the CEO, and he was thoroughly impressed!"
Business Impact
The success of this project led to increased business for my consultancy. OOCL returned for two additional projects, specifically requesting to work with me again, underscoring the lasting value delivered.
Management and Mentorship
The most rewarding aspect of this project was mentoring an engineer who aspired to transition into design. Watching her grow into a budding designer and later learn that she evangelized design throughout the company and led her own design projects made me incredibly proud. Our continued connection post-project is a testament to the impact of this mentorship.
